Top African Wildlife Experiences: Why You Should See the Great Migration This October

Being able to say that you invested in an African safari package and went on an amazing wildlife adventure is a dream for many people. However, being able to say that you went on this amazing safari and saw the Big 5, the Great Migration, or any of the other ultimate experiences you can have while there is something else.

Africa is often regarded as a hot and arid place, with long, dry days and even hotter nights. Well, this is mainly true, but there are changes to the seasons, just like in the rest of the world, that bring about some of the most magnificent sights ever seen.

The summer is when most of us like to travel, getting away from our daily routines to explore somewhere warmer and exotic. However, the off-peak season for many places is in the fall. Thus, September and October are the perfect time to explore the wonders that Africa has to offer.

The Great Migration

Africa’s Great Migration is when the wildlife on the desert plains travel from one end of the continent to the other. Giant herds of zebras, wildebeests, and more traverse the harsh plains, enduring the sun’s heat, dry winds, and the threat of predators at every step.

During this time, the goal is to find food and water, which are often depleted in certain areas, so travel is required. This also serves as the calving season, and many of the new generations will be born along the way.

The migration itself is never-ending. Once the herds have reached their goal, it’s time to head back the other way. Therefore, they are constantly on the move, keeping the ecosystem alive and functioning.

The Jewel of the Kalahari

Located In Botswana, the Okavango Delta sees a magnificent migration of animals and birds alike. Being a wetter place in the Delta along the Okavango River, you will see more wildlife that prefers the wet terrain.

Birds in particular love this area, and you can be delighted to see many species, from the African jacana to the white-backed night heron. You can also catch a glimpse of smaller birds like the African skimmer or the bee-catcher.

Migrating animals such as the African buffalo, lechwe, topi, and even the blue wildebeest all migrate through the Delta and face challenges from the top predators in the area.

October and November are the best times to visit as there will be fewer tourists. Also, with calving season in full swing in November, you can witness the circle of life as the newborns are often preyed upon by crocodiles, lions, and leopards.

Maasai Mara National Reserve

Kenya is home to the Maasai Mara National Reserve with its rolling hills and flowing rivers that give way to picturesque landscapes and incredible sunrises and sunsets. Here, you can see zebras and wildebeests in their thousands, naturally roaming and enjoying life.

In October, most of these herds leave, starting their migration to find fresh grasslands and watering holes elsewhere. However, you can still observe many remaining herds.

With this part of Africa being quieter after migrating, you can enjoy these magnificent animals with a lesser threat from predators. Indeed, this can make for some stunning wildlife photography.

Kruger National Park

South Africa is another great place to visit and witness the great migration. The Big 5 in Africa make Kruger National Park part of their home. Here, you can take full advantage of the sights of migratory zebras and buffalo that come through.

Predators will be out in full force as their prey has typically been weakened by the hot temperatures and lack of food and water. Additionally, during calving season, there are many opportunities for predatory animals to feed.

Due to the dry season at the end of the year, the park is prone to bushfires. However, with the trees losing their leaves, naturally or as part of the fire, witnessing the larger game wildlife in action is optimal from October to November.

Open Endless Plains

The Serengti in Tanzania in the local Maasai dialect means “open, endless plains”. This is a very accurate description of the vast plains that make up this part of Tanzania. Another accurate description is “Siringet”, which translates to “the place where the land runs on forever”.

While this may paint a desolate picture, the Serengti is in fact home to an abundance of wildlife, luscious grasslands, and the stunning and unique acacia trees.

Here, many of the migrating animals will converge while heading to their destinations. Thus, you can see large herds of zebras, wildebeests, gnu, and buffalo, for example, all in one place. Elephants are also a common sight.

Additionally, for the birdwatcher, there are hundreds of bird species that migrate here or naturally call the Serengeti their home.

October is prime time to see this convergence and witness all that Africa has to offer in one place. While there will be some rain, the rainy season officially begins in November, so October is the perfect time to witness nature as never before.

This time of year has fewer tourists as well, so you don’t have to fight large crowds to see the wonders as they happen. You can get a front row view and witness the amazing sights, unobstructed by other people and flashing cameras.

As it is the off-season, you can also take full advantage of the cheaper rates on some African safari packages. Indeed, by travelling to Africa in October, you will get to witness more wildlife and excitement than during the rest of the year.
