9 Things You Need to Pack for Your Safari Trip in Tanzania: A Beginner-Friendly Guide

Imagine a safari dream that’s filled with exciting opportunities to see some of the world’s most exquisite and fascinating wildlife coupled with luscious greenery, snow-covered mountains, and deserts that stretch for miles all in one unique place.

For many, this is a dream trip come true. However, what you pack to take on this incredible adventure can make or break your journey.

Fortunately, Zara Tanzania Adventures, which offers the perfect all-around trip, is here to help you prepare.

1. Medical requirements

Before travelling to Tanzania, you will need to visit your doctor, as you will require a yellow fever vaccine and a certificate to prove you received it.

You should also take malaria medication prior to your trip. While you don’t need documentation for malaria treatment, it is advisable to take it as prescribed.

If you are unsure what is required and when, medically, before the journey, your Tanzania travel agents will be sure to clarify and advise you.

2. Shoes

When it comes to footwear, sandals and flip-flops are great for relaxing and going to beaches. However, for a safari experience, something a little more substantial will be your best friend.

Good hiking boots will allow you to explore the wilderness or mountain trails and take in the sights and sounds with increased enjoyment. They will also provide protection from rocks, sharp plants, and hidden dangers, such as any one of the poisonous snakes that reside in this amazing landscape.

Soft, breathable socks will prevent sweating and overheating while being comfortable. Lighter footwear is suitable for the evening, so you can relax and explore your hotel without the heavy weight of the hiking boots.

3. Clothing

Depending on where your Tanzania dream safari takes you, it’s good to know that the temperatures can range from 0 to 30 Celsius in the same 24-hour period.

During the day, shorts that are mid-thigh in length or longer will provide protection from the sun and on hikes. Short-sleeved shirts that are breathable will help you keep cool while shielding your shoulders from the intense sun.

At night, the temperatures can drop, so we recommend longer-sleeved shirts and pants.

Try to avoid tight-fitting clothing, as this can lead to increased sweating and body heat. Dehydration can be a real problem, so clothing to help keep you cooler should be a top priority. Don’t forget your swimsuit for the hotel pool!

4. Head gear

It is important to know that the sun will shine for approximately 12 hours a day, typically rising at 6 a.m. and setting at 6 p.m. Therefore, having appropriate headgear will help to keep the glare out of your eyes, and reduce the risk of heat stroke.

A large-brimmed hat is good for when you end your day beside the hotel pool, but a bandana or other smaller-brimmed hat will serve you well on hikes and excursions

Sunglasses are also a must to protect your eyes and to help you see the wonders you have come to experience.

5. Personal hygiene

Aside from any essential items, such as medications, all other things should be kept to a minimum.

We recommend toilet paper and a baggie for used paper while hiking, sunscreen lotion, toothbrush and toothpaste, and a comb or small brush to keep things light and take care of basic needs.

A towel, a bar of unscented soap, and a small bottle of 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner will give you a fresh and clean feeling at the end of the day. Wet wipes will also be a blessing while you’re on your safari, along with hand sanitizer and a mirror.

6. Important documents

Aside from your passport, plane tickets, local currency, and medical insurance documents, you will also be required to bring the following:

  • Yellow fever certificate
  • Vaccination records/certificates
  • Visa for travel in Tanzania

An address book, maps, and guidebooks are also recommended but are not essential.

You should also make copies of all your important documents and keep them in a separate place from the originals. Thus, if your luggage gets lost in transit, you will have copies of your vital papers, which you will need when dealing with authorities and consulates.

7. Basic first aid

While your travel guide will have a basic first aid kit, bringing your own is a good idea. Anything can happen in the vast wilderness, and it can take a long time to get help.

Basic items like ibuprofen, insect repellant, sunscreen and lip balm containing sunscreen, band-aids and bandages, medical tape, and diarrhea medication can help to make hard situations more bearable.

8. Luggage

Softer, malleable duffle bags can hold a lot and are easier to pack in the back of the safari jeep. You should also consider a day pack, such as a small backpack, for the day’s excursion essentials.

9. Other miscellaneous items

Packing light is essential. However, that doesn’t mean you cannot bring a few extra items.

Consider bringing batteries and phone chargers, binoculars to see wildlife at a safe distance, a camera, a flashlight for night excursions, electricity adapters, and an alarm clock to help you adjust to the new time zone.

Also, carry some gifts for village children, such as colouring books, crayons, or chocolate. Additionally, small gifts to show gratitude for your guides, like hats and shirts, will all be appreciated.

The Zara Tanzania Charity

These gifts, for both the local children and tour guides, define the charity’s ethos of giving back to the community. With so many challenges that Tanzania locals and wildlife face, such acts of kindness will mean the world to them.

Zara Tanzania Adventures was created to not only give you a truly once-in-a-lifetime safari experience but also to give back to the local communities, increase sustainability, protect wildlife for future generations, and increase staff safety, ethical business practices, and customer satisfaction.

With essential and critical projects such as the Moshi Kids Centre, Ngorongoro Maasai Preschool Solar Project, and the Maasai Women Make a Change initiative, there are so many valuable things that the charity provides.
