Things to do in Zanzibar:

Slave trader Tippu Tipp

Stone Town Living History Tour (half-day adventure):

A tour with a guide through the fascinating labyrinth of Stone Town is an all-time classic for tourists who come to the island of Zanzibar. But watch out! Within the labyrinth of narrow lanes you will now meet historical personalities such as the infamous slave trader "blinking eye" Tippu Tip, the melancholic Princess Salme, world-famous Taarab singer Siti binti Sadi and the mighty Sultan Bargash!! Finally the history of Zanzibar has come back to life!

There are many surprises included in this entertaining and educational 3 hours walk which includes the Tippu Tip House, the Hindu Temple, a door carver's workshop, the Palace Museum, and the House of Wonders.

Spice Tour (half day excursion):

A trip to the lush green gardens of innumerable spice and tropical fruit trees. Many of these spices have medicinal properties and are still used not only by the locals to cure certain maladies. Taste a variety of fruits ranging from the rose apple to the guava, savour different spices in their aromatic state, cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, vanilla, black pepper, and others. You get to see rare plants used for preparing cosmetics such as henna, lipstick tree, perfume tree etc. You will also visit the ruins of the Kidichi Persian baths en-route.

Red Colobus monkey

Jozani Forest (half day excursion):

This wetland forest is the only one remaining intact on the island. It is part of the Jozani-Forest-Chwaka-Bay Natural Reserve which forms an important coastal eco-system. Only 45 minutes from the city center, it is home to the Red Colobus monkey (procolubus kirkii), a very rare species that is only found in Zanzibar. The tropical rain forest with huge plants and lush vegetation is an attraction itself, with a swamp in the middle, and a small stream flowing into the ocean. There is further a mangrove forest, where small colonies of cute primates host visitors to a live show. The park is best visited before 10 am or after 4 pm.

Safari Blue (full day trip):

Safari Blue brings you close to the most interesting and beautiful natural wonders of a tropical Indian Ocean Bay with a lot to discover!

You will leave from Fumba with a traditional wooden sailing dhow. The first stop is snorkelling at the Kwale coral reef, offering an overwhelming abundance of corals and colourful fish. Then you can relax with a fruity snack on a paradise-like sandbank surrounded by turquoise blue waters. At that area pods of dolphins are commonly seen.

The dhow will then bring you to an island where a beach barbecue seafood buffet is served comprising grilled calamari, two types of grilled fish, slipper lobster and chicken. Chilled soft drinks and cold beer are also included. After the lunch a tropical fruit tasting will be presented with the chance to savour between 10-15 types of tropical fruits. A shot of Amarula liqueur in coffee will finish this gastronomical sensation. Other activities on the island include a short jungle walk to see and climb a 500-year old baobab tree, short sailing trips on a Ngalawa traditional outrigger canoe, and a swim in a mangrove lagoon. You can enjoy the sunset with a sundowner drink on the way back by sail to Fumba.

Giant tortoise on prison island

Prison Island (half day excursion):

Also known as Changuu Island, this islet is a 20-minute motorboat ride west of Zanzibar. Slave owners formerly used it for detention of disobedient slaves. Then a jail was built, hence the name Prison Island, but never put into use. Today the island is a small tourist resort, famous for its giant tortoises which have been brought there by seafarers some hundred years ago. A tour guide will give you a short introduction to the islet’s interesting past and you can then spend some time sunbathing, swimming, snorkelling, or walking around to see tortoises and peacocks. We can arrange lunch on the island.

Village life excursion (full day trip):

This excursion will give you an interesting insight into the traditional life of fishing and farming in Zanzibar.

The excursion begins with a visit to a spice plantation. Not only will you see how farmers cultivate spices, fruits and vegetables, you will also get to smell and taste them, as fruit samples and spiced teas are served.

After stopping at a local door carver, we reach the village of Mchangani where little has changed during the last centuries. Women still use dried palm leaves for weaving mats and thatching roofs. Enter a local house and see how women paint henna and collect water from a well. A local will show and explain you how the coconut is essential for the villagers. You can participate and learn how to remove the husk and witness the grating process.

At the Mkokotoni fish market you can see the variety of fish caught in the Zanzibar seas. Then, we visit a local blacksmith showing how to manually make nails. Lunch will be taken at a beach restaurant in Nungwi where guests will be given the chance to take a splash into the turquoise blue water. So don’t forget to bring your beach wear!

In Nungwi you will witness how wooden dhows are built. Last stop is the “Mnarani natural aquarium”, a lagoon which server as a sanctuary for the endangered green sea turtle.

Dolphin boat

Dolphin Trip (half day excursion):

The bus leaves town at 8:30 AM for a one hour drive to Kizimkazi Dimbani, Southwest of the island. Then you take a motorboat to the dolphin conservations area where there is high probability that you can spot some dolphins (though we cannot guarantee it!)

Under certain circumstances it might be possible to where you can swim close to the dolphins. Life jackets and snorkeling gear is included. At midday, you go to a sea-side sand bank where a seafood BBQ is served under a temporary shelter.

After lunch, you can continue snorkelling in the coral reefs. You depart Kizimkazi in the late afternoon and arrive back at your hotel by 6:30 pm.
